Father Knows Best: Organizing Your Wallet

Q:
My wallet is full to capacity. It’s got all sorts of things in it, and as a result it’s become a blackhole – I can’t ever find anything that I need without a long search. How can I keep it more organized? Steve,LA

A: I’ve seen people wallets bursting with receipts, business cards and phone numbers, all obscuring its essential contents – ID, money, and credit cards. You sound like this type. Overcoming the mentality that leads you to keep everything will take discipline, but if you follow this advice – a technique I learned from my father – your wallet will be transformed.

My father keeps a large wallet in his underwear drawer. He puts the cards he doesn’t want, use, or care about there. (He puts the cards he doesn’t want my mother to use there, too.)

The rule here: Don’t carry everything that fits in your wallet in your wallet. Pick and choose. Take out the things you don’t use, and leave them out. Do it weekly at a minimum and if you can bear it, do it daily – or every other day.

My father carries a wallet that’s similar in style to the DKNY Front Pocket / Money Clip. If you slim down your wallet regularly, this wallet’s for you: simple and sleek, designed for people with a clear purpose. It’s got a single pocket for ID, a clip for bills, and a single slot for a card – all you really need to function in today’s advanced capitalist state.

A second option, if you can’t quite slim your wallet as much as my father, is the Nautica Slim ID Fold Leather Wallet. The billfold provides space for all the cards you need to carry, plenty of room for cash, and a pocket for business cards. Even better, the pull out ID holder has space for a debit card and cash, so if you’re entering a club or bar and want less not more, you can travel almost as light as a feather without sacrificing any essentials.

A third option – one which I’ve found is great for travel – is the Triple Five Soul Wallet Wallet Pouch Bag. Large enough to hold keys, pens, tickets, and even a small camera, it’s designed to wear, with either a belt clip or a shoulder strap, and the front-zipped compartment makes for easy access wherever you journey.
