The Hat Makes the Man

The Hat Makes the Man

Q: I normally go all out on Sundays when it comes to clothing. When I go to church or visit with friends, I want to look my best. I normally wear slacks from Banana Republic, a button -down shirt from Old Navy, and a tasteful vest from Kaufman's. My problem is what to wear on my head! During the winter, I wear a '50s-style Fedora—something you would see on Frank Sinatra or the Blues Brothers—but it is too warm in the summer. I was never one for baseball caps or those little bucket hats (I call them Gilligan's Island hats). I was wondering if I would be too eccentric (is that possible?) if I wore a boater (skimmer) hat, those straw hats with the flat top from the '20s, '30s, and '40s. Everyone says my outfits look great and are a tasteful way to "be vintage." Do you think the skimmer would be taking it too far? Mitchell

A: The answer to your first question, about whether it is possible to be too eccentric, is a tricky one. If you're in a club in New York or any crazy city, I would say no, but if you're hanging out with your friends in the middle of America, I would say sure, it is possible to take it too far. However, the boater or skimmer hat that you describe is a cute alternative to the already slightly tired fedora hat, poor boy, or newsboy cap. (If you don't know the difference between cap types, do a search on the Internet and you'll quickly be educated.) It seems when going out at night in New York, every guy, gal, and everyone in between is wearing one of these types. For the summer, the skimmer hat is very practical. The straw is light and breathable and a comfortable alternative to the wool that is the common fabric used in these other caps mentioned above. Also, it sounds like it would match your style well. We would love to see a picture of your wearing the cap this summer!
