Tank Top Trauma
Tank Top Trauma
Q: When wearing a white dress shirt and tie to work, is it OK to wear a tank-style undershirt underneath when you can see its outline through the shirt? I find them much more comfortable, but I don’t want people to think I look “nerdy.” How about no undershirt? That’s the most comfortable, but you can see a hint of skin through the shirt. Is it still appropriate for the workplace?

A: Seeing the outline under your dress shirt is not appropriate, nor does it look good. One suggestion is to wear either a undershirt in crewneck or V neck in a smaller size to give you that slimmer and tailored silhouette. The outline of a tank top does not look good, especially in the workplace when you are wearing casual/dressy separates. T-shirts are worn under dress shirts because most people wear their dress shirts two to three times before taking them to the cleaners to be either laundered or pressed, which saves money all around. In the summer season and climate if you don’t sweat too much, then you can always opt to be T-shirt free. I like both, and it really depends on the fabric of your dress shirt. Finding a good fragrance and antiperspirant can help too.
