The Functions of Shades!

Sunglasses have three key functions: health, performance, and fashion. When buying, consider each.

Health - Do your glasses eliminate UV rays? If they do, they could protect you from having cataracts later in life. By reducing glare, sunglasses can keep you safe whether you’re driving or participating in extreme sports. If you have sensitive eyes, you might want your glasses to filter out more light. Other health concerns may be important as well.

Performance - Different people use sunglasses for different reasons. Filters that reduce glare and increase contrast can help if you’re playing softball, fishing, or snowboarding. Different tints are designed for different circumstances; gray is good for driving while yellow and gold are excellent for snow. If you fish, you’d be advised to bring polarized sunglasses with you. Other articles in this section deal with the various coatings that increase sunglass functionality.

Fashion - Your choice in sunglasses will probably be influenced by fashion. Plastic sunglasses are considered more casual than glass sunglasses. Wire frames go well with most outfits but tend to be more fragile than plastic glasses. Wraparounds stick to your face and are in vogue with the surfing, skating, and snowboarding crowds. How your glasses look, ultimately, depends on your face, with square and rectilinear glasses looking better on round faces, and square faces well suited to more oval frames.
